My legs are sore and hurt. I guess hill workout on Monday and yesterdays run were just to much. And not forgetting that I did not have a rest day from running since Friday.

On Saturday I did the Do Life 5K. That was a nice and easy run. We even walked a bit during that run to talk more. On Sunday I went out for a 1 mile walk followed by a 2.5 mile run. Fast run. Faster than I am used to. On Monday my class was canceled and I went out to the hill workout. Or better what we call a hill workout here in Florida. There I ran 3 miles. Felt okay afterwards. But when I started my run yesterday I could feel the hills. My knees were screaming, my feet felt like somebody put some concrete blocks on them. The first mile was hell. Every step hurt. But I kept going. After the first mile a big surprise awaited me: my legs loosened up and could run normally. Not really fast but I could run with out all the heaviness I felt before. I finish a 3.6 mile run. But today my legs feel sore again. Now I have to do something again that.

Meine Beine tun weh.

Dagegen muss ich jetzt mal was tun.

slow cooker

I bought a slow cooker a few months ago but I never really used it. I don’t know what to cook in it. And that’s why I ask all of you: Do you use a slow cooker and have some tips for me? Maybe even some easy recipes I can try? I would so appreciate it if you could help me out here.

~~***~~

dice running

At yesterdays track workout we did something special - we did a “dice workout”.

Here are the rules for it:

1. One of the runners rolls a dice.

2. The number of the dice tells the runners how many quarters of the track they are going to run.
e.g. 1 = 1 quarter, 2 = half a lap, 3 = 3/4 of the track and so on

3.  Everybody starts running at the same time but runs at their own pace.

4. The person who rolled the dice has to run, everybody else can choose to sit the run out.

It was a great workout and yes, I did sit a few rounds out. I am a bit lot slower than the others and they already started the next round when I just finished my old one. And I wanted to take it a bit slower to give my achilles tendon time to heal before I start speed training again. It’s a fun way to run and I loved it.

the odyssey with a new pair of stability shoes

You might remember that I wrote about my pink Mizuno shoes. I bought them some time ago when my sister was visiting me.

I run in them a few times for short distances and everything felt okay. I liked these shoes and just needed to get used to the stability/support part of them. But as soon as I hit the 3 mile mark my feet started hurt. It felt like somebody was putting little needles inside the balls of my feet and it hurt like hell. What was going on?

At first I tried to run through it and thought that it might just be a “getting used to the new shoes” thing. But it did not get better. More like the opposite - it started to hurt more. And the funny part about is was: As soon as I stopped running the pain went away.

I talked to different persons and tried to get some advise. I put more support into my shoes. More cushion in the area of the balls of my feet. It did not help. Me toes fell asleep on time, another time I got shine splits, the back of my lower leg hurt another.

Then I went to a place where they make orthotics and asked them for help (another runner recommended them to me). I went there and they tried to help me. They put some little sticky things on my insoles and I run around the store and the parking lot. It felt better but I couldn’t be sure before I did not run the 3 miles. When I left that store I decided to keep the shoes on my feet while doing some shopping. One hour later I was in pain. Shin splints and sleeping toes - worse than before. What is going on with that shoe? I took the shoes off and within 5 minutes I was pain-free.

After letting the shoes collect more dust on my shelf I decided to go back to the store and see if I can get them exchanged for another pair of shoes. I wasn’t sure if it would work out since I bought these shoes 3 months ago but it as worth a shot. Better than have then sitting at home and do nothing. And to my surprise they exchanged them - I now got a new pair of blue Brooks shoes. I am so happy. I don’t have to worry about these other shoes anymore. I just hope the new shoes are better than the Mizunos and I do not get any problems from them.

But in this whole story there was a big learning part for me:
1. Buy the right shoe for your foot.
2. Don’t try to make the shoe fit your foot. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t fit!
3. Spent time to figure out if the shoes is the right one and if not try to exchange it right away instead of fixing something that’s not broken.

this and that

I know I have been gone a bit and did not write anything. I took some time off my computer - I spent way to much time in front of it. Therefore not much blogging for me during the last few weeks.

About 2 weeks ago I my right achilles tendon started to hurt after a run and had not been right since then. I took some days off and on the other days I reduced my milage. I don’t want to have anything bad happen to it. Today was my first run when it did not hurt. Yeah.

I also got new shoes. You remember I bought some new Mizuno’s awhile back and they hurt my feet. I finally went back to the store and got them exchange for a new pair of Brooks. I ran in them today for 2.5 miles (still taking it slow b/c of my achilles tendon) and I like them. I hope it will stay that way when I start running more miles.

~~***~~

Yesterday morning I did a 7 mile run. Actually I ended up doing 7.28 miles - not sure where I got the quarter mile extra. I ran at a nice flat course that is a 11 mile loop. Of course I did not do the full loop I ran 3.5 miles out and turned around when my Garmin let me know that distance.

I stopped a few times but I still ran a good time. And running should be fun - not just pressure to go on and on. I talked to a few runners during my little stops and afterwards I started again with new energy.

~~***~~
